The United States Vs Billie Holiday, is another problematic biographical film of the rise of Billie Holiday. That features a terrific performance from Andra Day, even if she does chew up scenery. Let us not be clear she is the main reason to watch this film.

The screenplay by Suzan-Lori Parks is uneven to be modest, it never catches its stride it should have, with a powerful story line, such as Billie Holiday. It should be as good as Judas and The Black Messiah but never even gets close to its full potential. The script misuses and mishandles the credibility of most of the cast involved.

Lee Daniels’ is still seeking his best film since Precious, even though The Paperboy was campy fun, it was no where near Daniels’ strong suit. It would have been interesting to see how this would’ve performed at the box office before covid, knowing that it was planned to be distributed by Paramount, before it was sold off to Hulu. This movie will work Gina as a Sunday afternoon movie but nothing to really write home about.
