Last week we got to interview a co-director Janeen Damian of Netflix’s new Christmas themed movie ‘Falling For Christmas’ starring Lindsay Lohan. How filmmaker friendly Netflix was and how their excited to be reuniting with Netflix and Lindsay for Irish Wish!

AJ Friar:
So how did this movie all come about and how was it like working with Lindsay Lohan and Netflix for this film as well?

Janeen Damian:
Well, Netflix came to us with the script and Lindsay attached, this was our first movie with Netflix. So we were really excited for a chance to work with them, because we’ve been hearing how filmmaker friendly they are and they are amazing. They were everything that we had hoped they had been. And so they set up meetings for us to meet Lindsay and to see if we were all a good fit. And this was really an important project for everybody, because it was Lindsay’s return to the screen, so we all wanted to make sure to get it right and we hit it off with Lindsay right away. So we all decided to jump in and make the most beautiful Christmas movie we could. So we hope that that’s what we achieved.

AJ Friar:
And I saw you guys do a lot of Christmas movies too. So what is it about Christmas that really gets you guys excited to make movies about the holiday as well?

Janeen Damian:
Yes, originally we started with our first Christmas film just because we’re huge fans of Christmas and the day after Thanksgiving we start watching Christmas movies, we try to watch one every day if we can, because as it’s kind of short, I guess it’s getting longer now, which is amazing. But when we grew up that was the case. So we have Christmas movies that we watch every year and we thought, well let’s make one, let’s make a Christmas movie and maybe everybody else will put that on their list. And so we started with that and we had so much fun doing it. We also are really big fans of rom-coms and so that gives us a chance to do romantic comedy and also within a really magical setting. And they usually shoot in beautiful places. And so, for us, it’s a really fun experience to get a chance to shoot anything Christmas.

AJ Friar:
And for this film, it almost felt like you guys were self aware of what you wanted it to be too. You didn’t take it too, too seriously, but it did follow some of the tropes that we grew to love from all the previous Christmas films. So how did you guys come about writing the script, knowing what you guys wanted to put out there and just having fun with it?

Janeen Damian:
Well, Christmas always gives you the leverage to be able to do something a little magical, you can suspend disbelief just a little bit, just because Christmas is this magical, fabulous time. And this script came to us, it was written by Jonathan Bennett and Ron Oliver and then Netflix brought us on board and then we fine-tuned the script and did a rewriting polish on it. Really bringing the locations to life that we found and also wanting to utilize all of Lindsay’s amazing talents. She’s so multifaceted as an actor, so we wanted to make sure that we really gave her something to really bite off and chew as far as an actor goes. So we just wanted to bring all those special things we shot in Utah in December, in the snow.

So that really allowed us to do a lot of special things in the things that you’re talking about that you expect in a Christmas movie, which is snowflakes, and snow, and gingerbread houses, and Santa’s, and family. And I think the most important thing is the warm feelings that you can also get and the hope, and the inspiration, and the giving, and love and all of that. So that’s what we tried to make sure that we got in there because that’s what Christmas is all about.

AJ Friar:
And how was it having somebody like Lindsay Lohan’s caliber acting in the star of your film? Because she was big when I was young. I remember when I want to say Freaky Friday was seeing that was Jamie Lee Curtis when that came out.

Janeen Damian:
Yes, yes.

AJ Friar:
So I remember seeing that in theaters when that came out. That’s how young I was when that came out. So how was it having her presence on the set, because she must have been like, “Okay, well now this is getting to be a Hollywood style film,” as well with her on set?

Janeen Damian:
Well, she’s an immense talent and a huge name and beloved by fans all over the world. And there’s been so many eyes on this project in particular, because it is her return. So I think that we all, felt a big sense of responsibility of bringing it up to her level, because she is a massive star. So we were all really excited and I thought the first day was something really special for all of us to be able to… She walks on set, everybody’s just like, “Ah!” That red hair and that smile that lights up the room. She’s just amazing. She has it, she has that star factor and you feel it once she walks in a room.

AJ Friar:
So have you tried pilk and cookies yet, her favorite kind of drink and snack for Christmas, have you tried that yet?

Janeen Damian:
I haven’t tried it, have you tried it?

AJ Friar:
Not yet.

AJ Friar:
So you’ve heard of it, have you seen the commercial?

Janeen Damian:
Yes, pilk. Yes, absolutely. It’s adorable. I haven’t tried it yet, but I’m going to, now that you me mentioned it, I actually definitely going to give it a shot. It looks naughty and nice.

AJ Friar:
It’s like one of those combinations you’re not so sure about like with having jalapeño IPAs or something like that. You just never know how he’s going to turn out.

Janeen Damian:
It’s true. It seems like it’s really not that far off from a root beer float when you think about it. So I think it’ll be good. Yeah, I think it’s a really great idea and a brilliant marketing campaign. They got the right girl for it.

AJ Friar:
And speaking of which, you have a new film coming out with Lindsay Lohan as the star again, so is there any details you can give us about what is it Irish Wish that’s coming out?

Janeen Damian:
Yes, Irish Wish. Well we just finished shooting it in Ireland and it is gloriously gorgeous. It’s a love letter to that beautiful country and the spirit of the people and everything that it’s all the wonderful things that it’s all about. And we are editing now, hence the hotel room here. So Michael’s in town shooting Young and the Restless, so I’m going to be editing all day today, virtually on my computer. So it’s going to be a while before it comes out. It’s a romantic comedy, it takes place in the summer. It’s a completely new indifferent story than Falling for Christmas. So we’re really excited to get this one finished. It’ll be coming, we don’t have a release date yet, but it’s coming out in probably about year I’m guessing.

AJ Friar:
Well, thank you so much for joining me today. It’s been really fun and congratulations on Falling for Christmas success on Netflix.

Janeen Damian:
Well, thank you. Thank you so much for having me.

AJ Friar:
Yeah, it’s been fun. Have a good day.
