The Perished FrighFest 2019 review

The Perished is a unique indie horror film that is just dripping of amazing atmosphere and ambiance that is reminiscent of The Witch and It Comes at Night. In this day and age it’s tough to watch movies that deal with tragedy knowing that the word is in a tailspin right now. You can’t escape it. What Paddy Murphy does here is simply in a word breathtaking. This is the first piece of work I’ve seen from him and also the first time I’ve spoken to him he’s got a real knack for film and acknowledges what psychological drama thrillers came before him which is incredible and it shows in his work. This is reminiscent of early Scorsese and Stanley Kubricks sense of dread this film is not to be missed. If you’re at Fright Fest I’d highly recommend seeing this one it’s one of the best films along with Troma films Mutant Blast playing.

The Fanatic Review

The Fanatic shows us a side of the talented actor John Travolta that we have never seen before I wouldn’t necessarily classify this as a flat out horror film even though it’s one of the better psychological independent thrillers of the year giving us John Travolta his best performance in years. As a crazed fan after Hunter Dunbar(Devon Sawa. Final Destination, Idle Hands)a popular young actor. I mean Moose(John Travolta. Battlefield Earth) is OBSESSED WITH HUNTER is a huge understatement I’ve dealt with being obsessed with someone like this and it isn’t healthy I’m glad that part of my life is over. I didn’t really care for Hunter Dunbar’s character in this film even though Fred Durst is notorious for giving us uneven characters some we care and some we flat out despise. Which in some cases work but here he falters amongst that line again. I once had someone on my friends list try to take credit for the character portrayed by John Travolta if that is the case I don’t really want to meet him. Overall however this a bright spot in John Travolta’s twilight of his VOD releases and this is on his upper scale of his recent films.

Moose is a rabid movie fan who is obsessed with his favourite celebrity action hero, Hunter Dunbar. When he is cheated out of his opportunity to finally meet Hunter, Moose gets a little help from his friend Leah, a well-connected paparazzi photographer, who knows how to find celebrity homes. Moose turns to stalking to get the celebrity interaction he feels he deserves, and while harmless at first, Moose’s actions begin to take a dark turn as his obsession grows stronger. As the visits continue to escalate, Hunter Dunbar finds himself in increasing danger.

Gwen Review

RLJE Films has partnered with Shudder, AMC Networks’ streaming service for horror, thriller and the supernatural, to bring the highly anticipated thriller Gwen to theaters, VOD and Digital HD on August 16,

GWEN is another homer run from RJLE and Shudder who’s last major hit was “Mandy” this however is a perfect folklore in horror in which I had an interview with the director and he said how big he was on to folklore and building atmosphere and avoiding jump scares. It shows here the atmosphere is dripping in ominous dread and is on par with classics such as The Witchfinder General.

Gwen started shocking audiences in TIFF and now that it’s released on VOD I hope it finds the audience it deserves especially when it hits Shudder this is one you’ll need to watch at night with the lights off. It’s unrelentingly suspenseful.

Final grade 5/5

Nightmare Film Festival releases it’s early 13! Continuing to show why its one of the genres best festivals

Columbus, OH – Nightmares Film Festival has released its “Early 13,” a baker’s dozen of early selections that serve as a preview of the tone and style of its October 24 to 27 event.

Among the early selections are films from Elija Wood (Mandy), Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz (Goodnight Mommy), and Travis Stevens (Cheap Thrills), as well as films helmed by women directors from around the world, and two filmmakers returning to Nightmares with new projects.

“The Early 13 is an exciting tradition for us, and has really become the unofficial start of the festival,” said NFF co-founder Jason Tostevin. “We do it because we want to give everyone a sense of the breadth and depth of the program that will take shape in October.”

Representatives of the major programming categories at Nightmares — horror, thriller and midnight; shorts and features — are included in the list, as are two films that will play as part of the fan-favorite Saturday block: the “Late Night Mind Fuck” program.

“We choose the Early 13 each year based on their high scores with the jury, and also for their alignment with the spirit of the fest and the tone of that year’s program,” said co-founder Chris Hamel. “Just like the full lineup, there is something for every genre fan in this preview.”

Submissions are still being considered for another month at Nightmares. The Early 13 films are the only submission decisions the festival makes before the Sept. 13 submission deadline, Tostevin said.

Nightmares Film Festival has been called one of the world’s best horror film festivals by every major genre outlet. It has maintained its position as the world’s top-rated genre festival on the submission platform FilmFreeway for 33 consecutive months.

Light of My Life review

Light of My Life is Casey Affleck’s most intimate film yet.

In his first narrative directed film(he directed to now infamous documentary I’m still here) Casey delivers a chilling look into a post apocalyptic world with no women. It’s an incredible feet that he pulls off majestically with the director of photography also showing off. The film is so beautifully shot it’s something that screams to be seen on the big screen like “Midsommar” it is awestruck with power all around from the screenplay being really well written with sharp and quick dialogue. To the directing job by Casey Affleck which is Oscar bait. Along with his acting I remember when he was just Ben’s brother in Chasing Amy and Good Will Hunting and now Casey is an academy award winning actor that just gets better with each film he stars in. This is simply is most commanding performance since Gerry with friend Matt Damon. Once again this mainly a two person show. Not many actors can pull this story line off and Casey Affleck once again makes a case why he is one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors working today. Now also showing us he could be an up and coming director that can deliver an Oscar winning picture. It has me drooling over what he comes up with next.
